Agreements for Being in Community
RESPECT
I agree to respect myself, the trainers, and my companion participants. In regard to the trainers, this means I acknowledge they are here to present "their" experiences, perspectives and understandings of this culture as these pertain to whiteness and racism in the United States.
RESPONSIBILITY
I agree to take responsibility for myself, my words and my actions during this workshop. I do not generalize, using words such as "everybody," "all people." I do talk about "I feel," "I think," "my experience is..."
REMAIN
I agree to remain in the room, physically, psychologically and emotionally. This means I stay present even when I am not comfortable. I understand this is hard work and I am committed to doing it for the duration of this workshop.
OPENNESS
I agree to remain open to what is being discussed, to what is happening and to new information.
PARTICIPATION
I agree to participate in exercises and to complete the assignments given, including homework to be completed overnight.
LISTENING
I agree to listen to others with all the gifts I contain within me, neither debating, interrupting, fixing, negating nor telling them "my" story.
SAFETY
I decide to be safe, knowing no one can guarantee another's safety and I agree to make it safe for others by maintaining confidentiality.
