Inclusion Institute for Healthcare (IIH)
Our membership to different social groups, which are based on race, ethnicity, economic class, gender, age, and other social identities, shapes our thinking, perceptions, and worldviews, and can have a profound impact on the way we work with and care for others. When working with clients from various backgrounds, many healthcare professionals find it difficult to communicate effectively across these differences, leading to the perpetuation of health disparities.
According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, "Low-income Americans, racial and ethnic minorities, and other underserved populations often have higher rates of disease, fewer treatment options, and reduced access to care." Thus, it is critical for healthcare professionals to develop skills that will allow them to communicate effectively and advance their cultural competence.
Patients will often come to healthcare providers, who are some of their most trusted sources, with questions about their care – and they have the right to receive information in a manner they can understand. Poor communication can lead to serious consequences for patients, including lack of adherence and discontinuation of services - not to mention the perpetuation of health disparities.
The Inclusion Institute for Healthcare (IIH) offers healthcare professionals an opportunity to take a proactive approach in addressing health disparities and advancing their cultural sensitivity, which is considered a crucial skill in the healthcare sector. The Affordable Care Act and the standards issued by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations stress the importance of having highly trained healthcare professionals who are able to effectively coordinate the care of their patients.
